This lot is a museum deaccession and is therefore offered without reserve

Tibet or Mongolia. The red-skinned protector lunging fiercely with his right leg bent in warrior's pose atop a lotus throne. The face with a wrathful expression, bulging eyes below curled eyebrows, wide nose, and mouth ajar revealing yellow teeth. The face flanked by pendulous earlobes suspending circular earrings, the head surmounted by a tall chignon, dressed in a yellow loin cloth tied at the front, and adorned with pendants and armlets. He is backed by a red, flaming mandorla.

Provenance: Galerie Hardt (established in 1976), Radevormwald, Germany, before 2020. Acquired by the gallery’s founder Peter Hardt (b. 1946) during his extensive travels in Asia, the first of which occurred during a formative world tour in 1973. Throughout his storied career, Peter Kienzle-Hardt organized countless exhibitions and participated in major international art fairs. He made many important contacts during this time and eventually met the Kienzle siblings, who shared his passion for Asian art and culture. A strong bond and deep friendship developed, ultimately leading to the creation of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst decades later in 2014. While the museum’s permanent exhibition predominantly comprised pieces from the Kienzle Family Collection, Peter Kienzle-Hardt supplemented it with objects from his own collection. Before his death in 2019, Horst Kienzle bequeathed his entire property to Peter and legally adopted him as his son, who has been using the name Peter Kienzle-Hardt ever since.

A tsa tsa is a type of votive tablet depicting a hollowed, reversed image of either a stupa, sacred symbol, or a one of the many deities from Vajrayana Buddhism. Its Tibetan name, which translates to 'earth-imprint,' is associated with the Sanskrit word for 'holy image' or 'reproduction' (sat-chaya), as well as 'stamp' or 'mold impression' (canchaka), which is derived from the Prakrit word for modelling (sacchava or sacchaka). In traditional methods, tsa tsa are formed with clay, where it is pressed using a wooden, stone, or metal mould and then left to dry. In modern practices, more durable materials such as resin, plaster, hydro-stone, or even pewter are used instead.

To Tibetans, creating tsa tsas is a spiritual practice that accumulates merit and fosters well-being. It is one of Vajrayana Buddhism's five preliminary practices, aimed at eliminating obstacles, purifying negativity, and generating positive energy. Practitioners often aim to create 100,000 tsa tsas in their lifetime. These sacred tablets are displayed in altars, stupas, prayer wheel niches, or holy sites and serve as protective amulets when placed in portable shrines (gau). Tsa tsas symbolize the Buddha's blessings and may include sacred substances, such as ashes or hair of revered figures, to enhance their spiritual potency.
