A PAIR OF SILVER INLAID BRASS TRUMPETS WITH CORAL CABOCHONS, RKANGLING, TIBET, 19TH CENTURY
This lot is a museum deaccession and is therefore offered without reserve

The curved end-blown trumpets are finely decorated with silver fittings and a reticulated mid-section with foliate scrolls, inlaid to the front with a coral cabochon and a foliate medallion suspending a loop-cord attachment.

Provenance: Galerie Hardt (established in 1976), Radevormwald, Germany, before 2020. Acquired by the gallery’s founder Peter Hardt (b. 1946) during his extensive travels in Asia, the first of which occurred during a formative world tour in 1973. Throughout his storied career, Peter Kienzle-Hardt organized countless exhibitions and participated in major international art fairs. He made many important contacts during this time and eventually met the Kienzle siblings, who shared his passion for Asian art and culture. A strong bond and deep friendship developed, ultimately leading to the creation of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst decades later in 2014. While the museum’s permanent exhibition predominantly comprised pieces from the Kienzle Family Collection, Peter Kienzle-Hardt supplemented it with objects from his own collection. Before his death in 2019, Horst Kienzle bequeathed his entire property to Peter and legally adopted him as his son, who has been using the name Peter Kienzle-Hardt ever since.
Labels: Galerie Hardt, inscribed ‘2 kl. Trompeten, Kupfer/Wei?metall, Tibet 19. Jh', priced at EUR 1,250.
Condition: Good condition with wear and manufacturing irregularities. Dings, scratches, tarnishing, and small nicks.

Weight: 280 g and 286 g00
Dimensions: Length 46 cm and 44.7 cm

The thighbone of a lama priest is the original form of the metal trumpets in this case. A single rkangling (leg bone flute) is used with a pellet drum to escape epidemics. Pairs signal the entry of ritual dancers, and perform rituals connected with fierce deities.

The rkangling of metal is preferred for ensemble playing as it is louder than its bone counterpart, and offers more immediate response, allowing more nuanced articulation. This short trumpet has a brass body with silver embellishments, especially around the central knob and bell. Often, perforated knobs were used to support or disguise joints in the tubing.

Shamans of both Buddhist and Bon traditions employ rkangling in many rituals, usually holding the trumpet in the left hand, the hand of “wisdom,” and often paired with a damaru, in the right hand, the hand of “method.”

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related end-blown trumpet, Tibet, circa 1850, 34 cm long, in the National Music Museum, South Dakota, object number 01375.
