A STONE FIGURE OF JAMBHALA, NEPAL, 16TH -17TH CENTURY OR EARLIER
This lot is a museum deaccession and is therefore offered without reserve

Finely carved, the God of Wealth seated atop a bounty of treasure, his left foot resting on a conch, over a lotus base with beaded rims, holding a mongoose in his left and a kapala in his right, dressed in a loose-fitting dhoti and richly adorned with beaded jewelry and billowing sashes. The mustachioed face with almond shaped eyes centered by an urna, the hair pulled up into a high chignon behind the five-leaf crown.

Provenance: Galerie Hardt (established in 1976), Radevormwald, Germany, before 2020. Acquired by the gallery’s founder Peter Hardt (b. 1946) during his extensive travels in Asia, the first of which occurred during a formative world tour in 1973. Throughout his storied career, Peter Kienzle-Hardt organized countless exhibitions and participated in major international art fairs. He made many important contacts during this time and eventually met the Kienzle siblings, who shared his passion for Asian art and culture. A strong bond and deep friendship developed, ultimately leading to the creation of the Museum für Asiatische Kunst decades later in 2014. While the museum’s permanent exhibition predominantly comprised pieces from the Kienzle Family Collection, Peter Kienzle-Hardt supplemented it with objects from his own collection. Before his death in 2019, Horst Kienzle bequeathed his entire property to Peter and legally adopted him as his son, who has been using the name Peter Kienzle-Hardt ever since.
Labels: Galerie Hardt, inscribed ‘Jambhala, Stein, Nepal, 17 Jh’, the back ‘Reg #6022’, and priced at EUR 750.
Condition: Very good condition with old wear, extensive ritual pigment, few small nicks and minuscule chips to exposed areas, the back with two minor nicks and a loss to one of the scarves.

Weight: 105.8 g
Dimensions: Height 7.1 cm

Jambhala, a god of wealth, has his roots in the early yaksha tradition of north India. He can be readily identified from his corpulent form and from the mongoose spitting gems that he holds in his left hand. He is understood to be an emanation of the Buddha Ratnasambhava, and his consort is the goddess Vasudhara, who also is a personification of wealth and abundance.
