拍品描述
A CELADON AND BROWN JADE ‘CHILONG’ PENDANT, SHE, LATE MING TO EARLY QING DYNASTY

China, 16th-17th century. The slightly arched, plectrum-shaped ornament carved in the form of an archaistic thumbring and worked in high relief to one side with a writhing chilong clambering over the surface around the central aperture, the reverse with a concave groove. The finely polished, semi-translucent stone of a deep celadon hue with patches of brownish-black.

Provenance: The present lot was consigned by a regular contributor to the auction market, a British dealer who trawls the UK art and antique fairs on a regular basis, often finding rare pieces from private sources.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, minuscule nicks, and minor signs of weathering, the stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into thin hairline cracks.

Weight: 62.8 g
Dimensions: Length 7.8 cm

The shape of the current piece was developed from the archer's ring. The earliest such example was excavated from the Shang dynasty tomb of Fu Hao in Yinxu. These rings were characterized by having a hole in the center and sharp extremities. After the Han dynasty, the development of such types of archer's rings became less functional but more decorative.

Description: A yellow and russet jade ‘chilong’ pendant, Qing dynasty, 18th century
Expert remark: Compare the closely related subject and form. This pendant is probably of a slightly later date than the present lot, evidenced by its exceptional carving quality associated with the Qianlong period, marked by rich incision work and elaborate openwork, whereas the present lot exhibits a bolder and simpler style. Note the color and the size (6.3 cm).
