拍品描述
A WHITE AND RUSSET JADE CARVING OF A CAT WITH BUTTERFLY AND LINGZHI

China, 18th century. Neatly carved, the cat is depicted in a recumbent pose atop a furled leaf with delicately incised veins, its body curled in a C-shape. A butterfly rests on its back legs, skillfully highlighted by the lapidary using a russet patch in the stone. A small lingzhi sprout extends from the cat's mouth over its back.

The translucent jade is of a fine white hue, accented with russet inclusions and icy veins. Subtly pierced between the cat and the leaf for suspension.

Provenance: From a private estate in Wiltshire, United Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear and minuscule nibbling to edges. The jade with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.

Weight: 102.7 cm
Dimensions: Length 5.9 cm

Cats and butterflies are symbols of longevity. The cat (mao) is a homonym for ‘seventy’, while the butterfly (die) shares the same sound as ‘eighty’. Together, they form a rebus for maodie. This term implies that one would live to be seventy or eighty — considered high age in ancient China.

Auction: Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 28 November 2018, lot 780
Price: HKD 175,000 or approx. EUR 23,000 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A white and russet jade ‘cat and butterfly’ group, Qing dynasty, 19th century
Expert remark: Compare the closely related subject, color, and manner of carving, the butterfly similarly picked out using a russet patch in the stone. Notably, the hammer price significantly exceeded the initial estimate of HKD 20,000-30,000, indicating that bidders were likely unconvinced by Sotheby’s 19th-century dating of this carving.
