拍品描述
A SPINACH-GREEN JADE ‘THREE FRIENDS OF WINTER’ VASE GROUP, WITH THREE RECEPTACLES, 18TH - EARLY 19TH CENTURY

China. Well carved in the form of a hollowed bamboo with small lingzhi sprigs near the base, beside a hollowed tree trunk issuing gnarled pine branches, and a larger lingzhi head issuing gnarled branches bearing prunus blossoms. The stone of a light spinach-green color with creamy veining and dark specks.

Provenance: Sotheby’s London, 17 May 2019, lot 234, estimate GBP 8,000 (or approx. EUR 12,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing). A distinguished British dealer in Chinese art, who has been in business since the 1970s, acquired from the above in an after-sale transaction.
Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear, tiny nicks to extremities, one small branch reattached. The stone with natural inclusions and fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.

Weight: 390.3 g
Dimensions: Height 11 cm

The 'Three Friends of Winter' (suihan sanyou) are frequently used across all mediums in Chinese art. Comprised of pine, bamboo, and prunus, this motif is emblematic of the Confucian virtues of fortitude and resilience. As the pine and bamboo are evergreen plants and the prunus, a plant that has lived for a long time, the three together are also an auspicious symbol of longevity.
