A RARE GRAY JADE OVAL DISC, NEOLITHIC PERIOD

China, probably Hongshan culture, circa 3500 BC. Of oval form, centered by a circular aperture with sloping rims. The translucent stone of a grayish-white hue with dark-gray patches, specks, and veins as well as icy inclusions. The dark gray areas of the stone appear russet-brown when light shines through from the other side.

Provenance
: Bruno Cooper Works of Art, Norwich, United Kingdom, 2009. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, acquired from the above. A copy of a signed invoice from Bruno Cooper, dated 28 October 2009, confirming the dating above, and stating a purchase price for the present lot of GBP 1,500 or EUR 3,300 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than 60 years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition for its age, with expected signs of wear. Minuscule chips along the rims have softened over time, and natural fissures in the stone have, in some areas, developed into fine hairline cracks. The surface shows alterations consistent with extended burial time.
