Scientific Analysis Report: A thermoluminescence analysis report issued by the Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art at Oxford University (the predecessor of Oxford Authentication) on 1 March 1989, based on sample numbers 466s80 taken from the right foot of one figure and 466s81 taken from the other figure’s left foot, sets the firing date of the first sample taken between 800 and 1400 years ago, and the firing date of the second sample taken between 900 and 1500 years ago, all consistent with the dating above. Copies of the reports accompany this lot.

China, 618-907. Each standing in an elegant pose with the body gently swayed to one side, the full face modeled with delicate features below an elaborate coiffure, delicately painted with a demure expression and rosy cheeks, the hands held in front of the chest, shrouded within the voluminous sleeves of the long, loose-fitting robe cascading in deep folds to the delicate shoes. Provenance: A & J Speelman Oriental Art, London, United Kingdom. Jules Speelman is a world-leading dealer and collector of East Asian art with 60 years of experience. In 1964 he joined his late father, Alfred, in the family business which already stretched back three generations to 19th century Holland and expanded into England around the turn of the century. Originally, A & J Speelman dealt with antiques, from European ceramics, silver, tapestries, and furniture to Chinese porcelain, and works of art. With his father, Jules gradually shifted the focus towards Asia and under Jules Speelman's skilled direction, A & J Speelman is now considered amongst the foremost dealers in Asian antiques, with a particular emphasis on figurative sculpture and works of art from the past 2000 years.
