A ‘MAW SIT SIT’ JADEITE WATERPOT IN THE FORM OF A THREE-LEGGED TOAD

China, 19th century. Carved from a thick maw sit sit stone, this auspicious three-legged toad is depicted seated with its head raised. The toad features exaggerated facial details, including large eyes, bulging brows, and a wide mouth with upturned lips. The hollowed interior includes a prominent aperture at the top. The opaque stone displays a predominantly dark green hue with pale green speckling and inclusions.

Provenance: From a private collection in London, assembled between the 1970s and 1990s, and thence by descent in the same family.
Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear, few minuscule nicks, and a tiny loss behind one leg. The stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.

Weight: 427 g
Dimensions: Length 10.5 cm

With a matching wood stand, finely carved in openwork as craggy rockwork with lingzhi, dating from the 19th century. (2)

Expert’s note: The mottled opaque stone exhibits deep, vivid emerald-green tones with paler veining and striations across its surface. This piece is a quintessential example of a distinctive jadeite type known as jade-albite or maw sit sit, which became popular in Chinese art from the nineteenth century onward. Characterized by its rich emerald-green color, opacity, and jagged lines of lighter, sometimes white veining, maw sit sit is a rare gemstone found exclusively in northern Myanmar. It was first identified in 1963 by the renowned Swiss gemologist Edward Gubelin, who named it after the village of Maw Sit Sit, near its discovery in the foothills of the Himalayas.
