A BLUE AND WHITE OCTAGONAL ‘LINGZHI’ PORCELAIN SNUFF BOTTLE, 19TH CENTURY

China. Finely potted with a baluster body rising to a short waisted neck with a flared rim. Each facet finely painted in shades of cobalt blue with vertical leafy lingzhi scroll, all below a floral band encircling the neck.

Provenance: From a French private collection. The lower body with an old label inscribed ‘300’.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including dark spots, pitting, and glaze recesses. Very minor blemishes around the mouth and foot rims.

Weight: 70.4 g
Dimensions: Height including stopper 65 mm. Diameter neck 23 mm and mouth 13 mm.

The recessed base with an apocryphal underglaze-blue six-character mark da Qing Yongzheng nianzhi.

While the rendition of the lingzhi sprays is well controlled and the blue is a good hue with pleasing variations in tone, these vases are emphatically not Yongzheng in either style or nature, nor are the marks convincingly written for the Yongzheng reign.

The flared mouth of the bottle, more akin to a miniature vase, is unsuitable for holding a cork. Of course, this “vase” could be utilized as a snuff bottle, much like any appropriate container that could be filled with snuff and stoppered could be repurposed as a snuff bottle. And so, it is no surprise that small vases of this type with flared inner necks have been broadly adopted by snuff-bottle collectors in the past century or so and were probably similarly adopted by snuff takers in the late Qing period.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related
Auction: Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 23 November 2014, lot 68
Price: HKD 27,500 or approx. EUR 4,100 converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing
Description: A blue and white porcelain ‘lingzhi’ snuff bottle, Qing dynasty, 19th century
Expert remark: Compare the closely related form and similar vertical sprays of lingzhi. Note the cover, which is possibly associated judging from the paler blue and the width being slightly larger than that of the rim. While Sotheby’s describes their lot as a snuff bottle, Hugh Moss concedes, ‘The continuous curve of the flared mouth is also ill-suited to holding a cork and is more characteristic of a miniature vase. Of course, any suitable container became a snuff bottle once it was filled with snuff and stoppered.’
