A PAINTED WOOD FIGURE OF THE DAOIST IMMORTAL TIANGUAN, LATE MING DYNASTY

China, 16th-17th century. Finely modeled and seated on a tall throne, the deity clasps his hands together near his chest. He wears a voluminous patchwork tunic, with layered robes that fall in ample folds over his arms, cascading over his legs and feet, revealing the tips of his pointed shoes. A necklace adorns his neck. The full oval face, with a jovial expression, is detailed with heavy-lidded eyes, a broad nose, and smiling lips, framed by large pendulous earlobes. His head is crowned with a tall miter, intricately decorated with gilt and polychrome foliate motifs. The back features a rectangular aperture, originally filled with sacred contents.

Provenance: From a private collection in Belgium.
Condition: Condition overall as expected and commensurate with age. Extensive wear, natural imperfections including old age cracks, rubbing and flaking to pigments, chips, nicks, minor losses, ancient pigments, remnants of gilt. Old repairs and touchups.

Dimensions: Height 86 cm (excl. stand), 90 cm (incl. stand)

The present figure most likely represents Tianguan, the Heaven Official, one of the Three High Officials (sanguan) of Daoism, who emerged in the Daoist pantheon as early as the late Han dynasty as the judges of human fate. His role is to give people their alloted share of luck and happiness. He is also sometimes identified with Fuxing, the star god of Happiness, and associated with the Lantern Festival, which fell on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month to celebrate the end of winter and the coming of spring. For the occasion, grand ceremonies were set up by the emperor to invoke blessings and from at least the Ming dynasty, a play named Tianguan Cifu 天官賜福 and featuring Tianguan as the main character enacted the bestowal of heavenly gifts on worthy individuals.
