A CAST AND REPOUSSé GILT COPPER FIGURE OF WHITE TARA, QIANLONG PERIOD

China, 1736-1795. Modeled in several parts, sitting in dhyanasana on a double lotus base, both hands in vitarka mudra, dressed in a dhoti incised with a foliate pattern, the body adorned in beaded jewelry with red and green lacquered details, armlets, earrings, and a five-leaf crown. The hair is pulled in a high chignon, the face with downcast eyes and bow-shaped lips, and with a floating sash framing the body. The base is sealed with a wooden plate.

Provenance
: From the private collection of Alexander Kenel, gifted to his friend Elsa in the 1960s, and thence by descent within her family. A Finnish private collection, acquired from the above. Alexander Kenel (1898-1970) was a composer and pianist who came from a family of famous architects, including Vasily Kenel (1834-1893) who was the personal architect of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia, for whom he built many buildings and redesigned his palace in Saint Petersburg. Alexander Kenel was born in St. Petersburg and studied at the Conservatory. He gifted the present figure to a befriended colleague named Elsa, when they worked together in the Khakass Theater during the 1960s.
Condition: Good condition with expected old wear and typical casting irregularities, rubbing and losses to gilding particularly to the head which shows only few remnants of gilt, some dents and warping to the base. The repoussé elements with wear, few repairs, minor touchups, and minor losses. The wood plate in the base is a later addition. Good patina. Overall, displaying exceptionally well.

Weight: 2 kg
Dimensions: Height 38.5 cm

The present work exhibits many characteristics common to the Buddhist workshops of the Qianlong period, such as the combination of cast and repoussé parts, the languid and slightly effeminate treatment of the face and body, and the tightly waisted double-lotus base with broad petals. The Qing court patronage of Buddhism that begun under the Kangxi Emperor reached epic proportions under his grandson, the Qianlong Emperor. The Buddhist centers of Beijing, Rehol, and Dolonnor produced thousands upon thousands of images to keep up with the demand of the numerous temples in and outside the capital.

Literature comparison:
Compare a stylistically related figure of the eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara sold at Christie’s New York, 18 March 2016, lot 1425. Note the similar treatment of the jewelry, the base, and crown.
