拍品描述
A GILT BRONZE FIGURE OF GREEN TARA, EARLY QING DYNASTY

Tibetan-Chinese, 17th-18th century. Finely cast seated in lalitasana on an elaborate double-lotus pedestal with neatly incised foliate scroll and geometric bands framed by beaded edges, the deity’s right foot resting on a separate padma issuing from the base, her right hand lowered in varada mudra and her left hand held in prithvi mudra.

Tara is dressed in a loose-fitting dhoti with exquisitely carved folds gathered at the feet and richly adorned with minutely beaded jewelry. Her serene face with almond-shaped eyes, gently arched brows, and full bow-shaped lips forming a calm smile. The hair tied into a high chignon topped by a jewel finial behind the foliate crown, with finely incised strands of hair elegantly falling over her shoulders.

Provenance: From a private collection in Vienna, Austria. The interior with an old label inscribed with an inventory number ‘5’.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities, minuscule nicks, light dents, rubbing and losses to gilt, losses to lotus insets and stone inlays, remnants of pigment. The base unsealed.

Weight: 1,008 g
Dimensions: Height 17.2 cm

Green Tara, also known as Shyamatara, is venerated as a savior and liberator from samsara, the earthly realm of birth and rebirth. According to Buddhist mythology, Green Tara emerged from a lotus bud rising from a lake of the tears of Avalokiteshvara, shed for the suffering of all sentient beings. She embodies compassion in a dynamic form, hence the usual depiction of the goddess with right leg outstretched, ready to leap out to ease suffering.
