A GILT-BRONZE FIGURE OF GUANYIN, 18TH CENTURY

Tibetan-Chinese. Finely cast seated in dhyanasana on a double lotus throne with a beaded edge, the right hand raised in apana mudra and the left lowered over the lap in dhyana mudra. Richly adorned in ornate beaded jewelry and clothed in loose-fitting robes with neatly carved folds and richly incised foliate hems, the undergarment held in place by a bow-tied sash.

The serene face well modeled with skillfully painted eyes and smiling lips. The hair pulled up into a high chignon topped by a four-petaled lotus behind the tall openworked crown, and elegantly falling in two long strands along the shoulders. The base neatly engraved with a double vajra.

Provenance: From a private collection in Vienna, Austria. The base with an inventory label, ‘12’.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, minimal casting irregularities, few minuscule nicks, light warping to base, some inlays lost and others replaced. The base resealed, retaining its original seal plate, with associated soldering marks. Remnants of ancient pigment. Overall, displaying exceptionally well.

Weight: 1,251 g
Dimensions: Height 18.2 cm

According to the 'Lotus Sutra', the deity could take the form of any type of God, Buddha, King, and Heavenly Guardian, and could appear in both male and female form, showing the bodhisattva's limitless transcendence beyond gender, in order to teach the Dharma (teachings of the Buddha) to sentient beings. During the Ming dynasty, it was common belief that, in accordance with descriptions in the Avalokiteshvara chapter of the Lotus Sutra and The 25 Great Ones chapter of the Surangama Sutra, Guanyin could transform at will and appear in more than thirty human forms to expound Buddhist teaching. The compassion of the bodhisattva is expressed in the subtle gestures of this elegant figure, the mudras signifying the bestowal of charity and reassurance.
