拍品描述
AN AGATE ‘WATER CALTROPS’ PENDANT, QING DYNASTY

China, 19th century. Neatly carved in the form of a cluster of three water caltrops, with a natural aperture to the center to allow for suspension as a pendant, the fruits well detailed with subtle grooves and incised veins.

The translucent stone is a beautiful and intense honey-brown tone with amber-colored inclusions. Good polish, rendering an unctuous feel overall.

Provenance: The Collection of Sir John Keswick, and thence by descent. Sir John Henry Keswick, KCMG (1906-1982), was a prominent Scottish businessman in China and Hong Kong. Following his father and grandfather, he joined Jardine in 1929, working in Shanghai until World War II. During the war, he served in Chungking for the Minister of Economic Warfare and as a Special Operations Executive representative at the British Embassy, where he befriended Zhou Enlai, later Premier of the People's Republic of China. After the Communist takeover, Jardine’s head office moved to Hong Kong, and Keswick became its taipan. He was an Unofficial Member of the Executive Council of Hong Kong (1952-1956) and received the CMG in 1950. As president of the Sino-British Trade Council (1961-1973), he was awarded the KCMG in 1973 for his contributions to China trade. Fluent in Chinese, Keswick maintained friendships with Zhou Enlai and Rosamond Soong Ch'ing-ling, and he regularly visited China, even after Deng Xiaoping's rise. A passionate collector, he focused on contemporary Chinese art.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few small nicks, light scratches, as well as natural inclusions and fissures.
