拍品描述
AN AGATE PENDANT OF LIU HAI, QING DYNASTY

China, 1644-1912. Finely carved, the immortal dressed in loose-fitting robes, his right hand holding an outsized cash coin on a string, the left clutching a fan, his trusty three-legged toad clambering over his right leg. The lapidary cleverly incorporated the darker inclusions of the stone, accentuating the fan, the toad’s eyes, and Liu Hai’s hair.

Provenance
: Collection of Armand Basi, No. 1028. A private collection in Barcelona, Spain, acquired from the above. A copy of a collector’s card from Armand Basi, dating the present lot to the mid-19th century, accompanies this lot. Armand Basi (1924-2009) was a Catalan businessman and fashion designer, the co-founder of the fashion firm bearing his name. In 1948, along with his brother Josep, Basi founded a small knitting company inspired by their mother Mercé Sabi's knitted sweaters. By the end of the 1950s, the business had expanded into a large textiles company, opening a factory in 1958, and by 1962 the Basis were exclusive manufacturers and distributors of Lacoste products in Spain. In 1986, Basi launched his eponymous fashion brand, which produced accessories, perfume, jewelry and watches, as well as clothing.

The story of Liu Hai is frequently told as ‘Liu Hai playing with the Golden Toad’. However, there is a hidden meaning here: The Chinese word for ‘toad’ is chanchu. Sometimes, Chinese will only pronounce the first character chan. In some Chinese dialects, the character chan has a pronunciation very similar to qian which means ‘coin’. Therefore, a storyteller reciting ‘Liu Hai playing with the Golden Toad’ could also be heard by listeners as ‘Liu Hai playing with the gold coins’.
