? A HIGHLY IMPORTANT GOLD AND SILVER INLAID IRON ‘MYTHICAL BEASTS’ BELT HOOK, WARRING STATES PERIOD TO HAN DYNASTY

Scientific Analysis Report: The present belt hook was analyzed by Peter Northover, of BegbrokeNano Oxford Materials Characterization Service, senior research fellow at the Department of Materials, University of Oxford. In his report, he evaluates the piece to be ‘ancient and authentic’. A copy of the examination report, no. R5446, accompanies the lot.

China, 5th to 3rd century BC. Expertly cast as intertwined beasts, the neck with two chilong, one finely inlaid with scales, the other with striped fur, and another beast to the lower end, set with a large ox-head with two curved horns, its body neatly inlaid in gold and silver with scrolls. The hook terminating in a curved dragon head with snarling mouth, and the reverse set with a circular knob.

Provenance: An old private estate in northern France. étude Delon-Hoebanx, Paris, 13 June 2019. The Essex Collection of Chinese Art, acquired from the above. Dr. Ben Essex is a noted English collector of ancient Chinese works of art. He inherited an impressive collection from his grandfather Max Lowenson, and has been expanding it with great verve and passion for decades. Today, pieces from Dr. Essex's collection are housed in the National Museum of Wales.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, some corrosion, small nicks and losses, light scratches, all exactly as expected from a 2000 years old piece of metalwork. The silver inlays have been professionally cleaned, leaving the natural patina perfectly intact.

Weight: 305 g
Dimensions: Height 17.6 cm
