? A TURQUOISE INLAID GILT BRONZE GARMENT HOOK, DAIGOU, WARRING STATES PERIOD TO WESTERN HAN DYNASTY

China, 4th to 3rd century BC. Superbly cast on the crest with a leonine beast, its tail and open mouth joined to a curved shaft terminating to one end with a dragon hook and to the other with an animated monkey, the shaft lavishly inlaid with turquoise to form archaic scrolls, the beasts decorated with neat incision work and agate inlays.

Provenance: From the collection of Max Lowenson. The Essex Collection of Chinese Art, acquired from the above via inheritance and trade, respectively. Born in Latvia, Max Lowenson (1879-1945) immigrated to Cardiff, Wales, in the early 20th century, where he became a successful businessman. His prosperity allowed him to travel extensively across Asia, sparking a deep fascination with Chinese history and leading to the formation of an impressive collection of Chinese art, spanning from the Warring States period to the Tang dynasty. Lowenson's legacy continues through his grandson, Dr. Ben Essex, and his wife, Nina Essex, who inherited and expanded the collection. Today, pieces from Dr. Essex's collection are housed in the National Museum of Wales.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Expected minor losses to inlays with associated touchups. Some inlays may be later additions. Small nicks and dents here and there. The bronze was professionally cleaned, with much of the patina left intact including distinct malachite and cuprite encrustations.

Weight: 122.8 g
Dimensions: Length 20.5 cm
