拍品描述
AN ARCHAIC BRONZE RITUAL WINE VESSEL AND COVER, HOULOU, HAN DYNASTY

China, 206 BC-220 AD. The pear-shaped tripod vessel is raised on three ram-head hoof supports, and has a yoke handle with dragon-head terminals attached by double linked chains to rings suspended from a pair of loops to the upper body applied with beast masks. The fitted cover with sloping sides is surmounted by three perforated animal head rings.

Provenance: Property of a Gentleman in Hampshire, United Kingdom, acquired in the 1990s, and thence by descent.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, signs of weathering and erosion, expected minor casting flaws, small nicks and losses, light scratches. Magnificent patina overall with areas of malachite, azurite, and cuprite encrustations.

Weight: 1,333 g
Dimensions: Height 18 cm

Round-bottomed, three-legged Hu are an exclusivity of Han bronze casters and reflect the taste of a period when all sorts of tripods were much in demand. Another unusual characteristic of this low-swung vessel rests with its cover, which is so tall and descends so low on the shoulder that it looks almost as though the vessel had been cut in two with a knife. Conversely, the spurred rings on the cover and the heavy two-headed dragon handle are rather traditional features.
