拍品描述
? A ‘DRAGON AND CARP’ CLOISONNé BASIN, MING DYNASTY, 16TH-17TH CENTURY

China. The deep rounded sides supported on a broad base and rising to a lipped rim, the interior finely decorated in bright enamels with a large carp leaping from turbulent waves confronted with a ferocious dragon sinuously writhing in the sky amid swirling clouds, enclosed by a band of floral scroll encircled by key-fret, scroll, and cloud bands, surrounded by foliate panels with mythical beasts against a white cloud-scroll ground, the exterior similarly decorated with a central flowerhead within a dense arrangement of clouds against a moss green ground to the base and red, white, and blue to the sides.

Provenance: A notable private collector in Kensington, London, United Kingdom.
Condition: Condition commensurate with age, with old wear and manufacturing irregularities, including warping and pitting. Minor losses to enamel with associated old fills as expected, minute dents, rubbing and wear to gilt.

Weight: 772.8 g
Dimensions: Diameter 29.2 cm

According to traditional Chinese belief, carp swimming upstream in the Yellow River must leap the rapids of the Dragon's Gate. The first to succeed in doing this is transformed into a dragon. This legend is frequently used and regarded as a metaphor for a scholar who passes the civil service examinations and succeeds in high office. The dragon-carp motif is thus a wish for success in achieving this.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related cloisonné rimmed basin with birds and flowers, Ming dynasty, 28.4 cm diameter, in the Kyoto National Museum, collection reference no. E甲480.
