拍品描述
A GRAY SCHIST GABLE DEPICTING INDRA AND BRAHMA ENTREATING THE BUDDHA TO PREACH, KUSHAN PERIOD

Ancient region of Gandhara, 2nd-4th century. Deeply carved with two registers within a caitya arch, the lower panel with the central Buddha seated in dhyanasana atop a cushion on a rectangular base flanked by Indra and Brahma bowing with hands folded together in anjali mudra, the Buddha’s hands lowered in dhyana mudra. The upper register carved with a seated Buddha flanked by attendants and the two naga kings Nanda and Upanda. The pointed arch with floral and dentilated bands.

Provenance: French trade. Acquired from an old private collection, where the piece was kept for more than 100 years, according to family repute.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Obvious losses, extensive wear, nicks, scratches, fissures, and signs of weathering and erosion. One structural crack with associated repairs.

Weight: 8,689 g (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 28.5 cm (excl. stand), 33.2 cm (incl. stand)

Mounted on a fitted fine wood stand, which is likely dating to the first half of the 20th century or even earlier. (2)

One of the most commonly depicted scenes from the life of Buddha is that of the gods Indra and Brahma entreating the Buddha to preach. Here, flanking the Enlightened One, these elder divinities raise their hands imploringly in prayer, hoping that Buddha will deliver a sermon. Buddha, however, is not certain that his profound doctrine is one that would be easily understood by his devotees. Although Indra first makes the request, it is Brahma who successfully convinces Buddha to preach the law by reminding him that someone will, in fact, achieve enlightenment.

Narrative panels were often affixed to the drums of large and small stupas and could thus be read like a storyboard sequentially in the ritual process of circumambulation. Reliefs were also placed in false gables on the front and the mid-section of a stupa. For a structural illustration, see Behrendt, The Art of Gandhara in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2007, fig. 15, page 33.

Compare a related gray schist gable, 3rd century, 59.5 cm high, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number 342-1907. Compare a closely related Gandhara gable depicting the same subject, circa 2nd century, Indian Museum, Kolkata.
