A BRONZE ‘WHEEL OF LAW AND SPEAR HEAD’ FINIAL, EAST JAVA, 13TH-14TH CENTURY

Indonesia. The ribbed shaft surmounted by a stylized four-pronged dharmachakra applied with foliate medallions and a flaming center bore, and topped by a spear head.

Provenance: Bruno Cooper Works of Art, Norwich, United Kingdom. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, acquired from the above (invoice not available). Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than 60 years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, signs of weathering and erosion, casting flaws, minor dents and losses, little warping. The bronze covered in a rich, naturally grown patina with vibrant malachite encrustations.

Weight: 751.5 g
Dimensions: Length 35.3 cm

According to Hindu and Buddhist iconography the state could be symbolized by a cakra or Wheel of Law. This has the form of a compass rose and is a representation of heaven. Initially it was a symbol of sovereignty but later came to symbolize Buddhist doctrine. In the Indonesian context the Wheel of Law seems to have been abandoned quite soon as there are only few examples known.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related bronze cakra with spear head, East Java, 13th-14th century, in the National Museum of Indonesia, Jakarta, inventory number 5961. Another Eastern Javanese wheel-shaped bronze finial, dated 1176 AD, is in the Ethnological Museum of Berlin.
