The casters of Pegu, near Rangoon, crafted finely detailed bronzes depicting local people in everyday activities, exemplified by this piece. These sculptures emerged alongside the adoption of Western-style realism by Burmese painters, blending European techniques with the influences of traditional Burmese religious statuary. Primarily intended for the local expatriate market, Pegu bronzes were showcased at British Empire Exhibitions during the 1920s and 1940s in London, India, and Rangoon.

Literature comparison:
A group of similar Pegu bronzes is in the collection of the National Gallery Singapore.
