A BRONZE FIGURE OF RATNASAMBHAVA ON A LION THRONE, KASHMIR, CIRCA 7TH-11TH CENTURY

Finely cast, seated in dhyanasana atop a circular pedestal raised on a lotus dais supported by a stepped plinth centered by a worshipper with hands raised in anjali mudra, flanked by a pair of lions. The principal deity with the right hand lowered in varada mudra and the left held in vitarka mudra, dressed in voluminous robes finely incised with U-shaped folds, adorned with large jewelry with foliate and beaded details.

The face with downcast eyes under arched brows, centered by an urna, the lips forming a small smile, crowned by a large trefoil crown centered by flower heads, all backed by a neatly incised and richly beaded flaming nimbus and aureole.

Provenance: The Degand Collection, Brussels, Belgium. Antichita’ La Balaustra, Bologna, Italy, 2003, acquired from the above. Collection of Paolo Bertuzzi, acquired from the above. A copy of a certificate written and signed by Giuliana Zanetti of Antichita’ La Balaustra, addressed to Paolo Bertuzzi, dated 13 September 2003, attributing the figure to Java, 12th century, accompanies this lot. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than 60 years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, casting irregularities, signs of weathering and erosion, fatigue cracks, tiny nicks, few minor losses. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown patina with vibrant malachite encrustation.
