A FAHUA GROUP OF A TEMPLE ATTENDANT AND A BUDDHIST LION, MING DYNASTY

China, 1368-1644. Well modeled as a bearded man wearing a tall hat and dressed in loose-fitting robes tied at the waist with a belt he is adjusting with both hands, standing beside a Buddhist lion with both paws resting on a brocade ball, a bell tied around its neck, its head raised toward the temple attendant, the pierced mouth slightly agape, all atop a double-lotus base, covered in rich turquoise and dark-blue glazes, while the unglazed areas are decorated in gilt as well as red and brown pigments.

Provenance
: Gerald Kerin Ltd., London, United Kingdom, 1966. The John E. Bodie OBE (1930-2023) Collection of Chinese Art, no. 120, acquired from the above. A copy of the invoice from Gerald Kerin, dated 15 April 1966, addressed to John Bodie, and confirming the dating above, accompanies this lot. Gerald Kerin was a London based art dealer, active between the 1930s and 1970s, specializing in old English and French furniture. John Emanuel Bodie OBE (1930-2023) was a partner of the property development agents DE & J Levy and played a leading role in the London property boom in the 1960s. He was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s 2002 Birthday Honors for his charitable services. Bodie was also a long-time friend of Margaret Thatcher, who he had worked alongside before, during, and after her time as Prime Minister. He began to collect Imperial Chinese porcelain during the later 1960s, constantly improving his knowledge by frequently visiting the auction rooms of Christie’s and Sotheby’s, where he met and befriended now-famed dealers Roger Bluett and William Clayton. Of the former, he wrote: “He was immensely scholarly and a very gentle person who took much pleasure in imparting his abundant knowledge to me.”
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, a small chip to the lion’s tassel, rubbing and losses to gilt and pigments.

Weight: 518 g
Dimensions: Height 19.4 cm

Literature comparison:
Compare a related fahua glazed figure of an attendant, dated to the Ming dynasty, 35.1 cm tall, in the Chengdu Museum.
