A BLUE AND WHITE KLAPMUTS BOWL WITH A SILVER HANDLE, WANLI PERIOD

China, 1573-1620. Well potted with deep rounded sides supported on a short tapered foot and rising to an everted barbed rim, painted in shades of cobalt blue to the interior with a central medallion depicting a butterfly fluttering amid flowering peony with rockwork and lingzhi, encircled by alternating panels of blossoms and peaches separated by narrow panels with ribbons, the rim decorated with cartouches enclosing auspicious flowers against wan and cloud diaper divided by ruyi heads. The exterior is similarly decorated with stylized floral sprays. Fitted with a lobed silver handle neatly incised with blossoms borne on leafy vines.

Provenance: From the collection of Mark S. Pratt, thence by descent. Mark Shrum Pratt (1928-2023), a graduate of Brown University, Harvard, the Sorbonne, and the Georgetown School of Foreign Service, served 35 years with the U.S. State Department with postings in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Vientiane, Paris, and Taipei, as well as Washington D.C., ending his career as United States Consul General in Guangzhou, China. Upon retirement, he returned to Washington and remained active with foreign affairs and China-related organizations. During his time abroad, Mark developed a keen taste for Chinese art, especially porcelain. Some pieces from his collection are now housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Condition: Minor chips to rims, the mouth rim with drilled holes, one section of the rim and body reattached, hairline and firing cracks.
