A SUPERB STONE STELE DEPICTING A TIRTHANKARA, KARNATAKA, 12TH CENTURY

South India. Powerfully modeled as a nude image of a Jain Tirthankara of the Digambara sect. Standing in a rigid frontal pose with arms extended straight down at the sides of the body, an inflexible attitude characterizing kayotsarga (dedication of the body). The Jina has massive shoulders and a slender waist and bears the lozenge-shaped srivasta (sacred mark) in the center of his chest. The face with a serene expression, downcast eyes and gently arching brows flanked by pendulous earlobes, the hair in tight curls over the ushnisha, backed by a foliate nimbus below a kirtimukha, all surrounded by diminutive male attendants and doted upon by vidhyadharas.

Provenance: Collection of Yvette Starck, Luxembourg, acquired between 1965 and 1975, and thence by descent to Jacques Grosbusch, Luxembourg. A copy of a provenance statement, written and signed by Jacques Grosbusch, dated 25 March 2024, and confirming the above, accompanies this lot.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Wear, obvious losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, natural imperfections, small nicks, and chips.

Dimensions: Height 47 cm (excl. stand), 58 cm (incl. stand)

Mounted on a metal stand. (2)

Jainism is propagated through the stories of twenty-four tirthankaras, figures who have conquered samsara (the cycle of death and rebirth) and provide others a bridge to follow them to moksha (liberation). Tirthankaras are often depicted as an ideal yogi in a seated posture, or kayotsarga, the standing “body-abandonment” pose, as in the present example. They also often have a srivatsa mark on their chest, perhaps to distinguish them from images of Buddha, which share many similar iconographical elements.

The nudity of Jain saints was a practice of both asceticism and their belief in non-possession, dating back to the days of Mahavira. However, a schism arose in around 79 C.E., extensively recorded in their literature, about what constitutes total renunciation. At the time Jain monks separated into rival factions, the Digambaras “clothed with the sky” or nude and the Svetambaras, “clothed with white”, who partially clad themselves with white cloth. According to inscriptions the Svetambaras worshipped the nude image without objection and for both sects the Jinas and the saint Bahubali are represented naked while all other deities are clothed and even ornamented.
