A PAIR OF POLYCHROME COPPER ALLOY TIGER-HEADED PALANQUIN COVERS

India, 17th-18th century. Hollow cast, the cylindrical shaft terminating in a large tiger head, its highly animated face with fierce expression, decorated with a tilak and skillfully worked with large eyes, arched brows, a short, whiskered snout, and an open mouth revealing sharp fangs and dangling tongue. The facial features and trim of the barrel picked out in bright pigments.

Provenance: From an important private collection in northern Germany, assembled before 1980.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear and casting irregularities. Few nicks, light scratches, surface abrasions, and flaking. Touchups to eyes. One tongue partially lost. Traces of ritual pigment.

Weight: 2,274 g and 1,954 g
