A SILVER FIGURE OF VISHNU, NORTH INDIA, 18TH-19TH CENTURY OR EARLIER

Finely cast, the Preserver of the Universe standing in samabhanga on a lotus pedestal raised on a square plinth with a beaded rim, incised with foliage to the sides. The primary hands pendant to the side, one clasped around the shaft of a mace, the secondary arms raised to the shoulder and holding a disc and conch. Richly adorned with beaded jewelry, the deity is dressed in a long dhoti, a thin scarf, sacred thread across the chest, and a vanamala (long floral garland). The serene face is sensitively modeled with heavy-lidded eyes, elegantly curved brows, and bow-shaped lips pursed to form a calm smile. The hair is tied in an elaborate chignon and secured with a tall conical headdress surmounted by a lotus bud behind the foliate tiara. The underside of the base with a sun in relief.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Good condition with wear, minor warping, small dings and dents, light nicks and scratches, encrustations, minor tarnish to silver.
Alloy composition range: 96.65% silver, 2.65% copper, and 0.69% Zinc. The lot was tested by the Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum.
