拍品描述
A FINE FAMILLE ROSE ‘SPARROWS AND PEONIES’ VASE, SHENDETANG ZHI MARK

China, 1830-1930. The ovoid body supported on a short foot and rising to a tall slender neck encircled at the waist by a bow-string band and ending in a flared mouth. Finely painted in bright enamels with a lively group of sparrows, some perched on stems or rockwork, others in flight, all with beaks agape, producing a doubtlessly sweet sound, amid pink and white peony blossoms with green leaves and buds. The reverse inscribed in black enamel with a poem by the Tang dynasty essayist, philosopher, and poet Liu Yuxi (772-842) titled ‘Admiration of Peonies’. The base with an iron-red four-character hall mark Shendetang zhi (‘Hall of Prudent Virtue’).

Inscriptions: To the reverse, ‘The shaoyao peonies [芍药Paeonia lactiflora] in the courtyard are charming, but have no character / The lotus flowers in the pond are pure, but unfeeling / Only the mudan peonies [牡丹Paeonia suffruticosa] have true beauty / When they bloom, they attract countless people from all over the capital to admire them.’

Provenance
: English trade. Acquired from a country home in Oxfordshire via the local auction market.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and firing irregularities.

Weight: 1 kg
Dimensions: Height 35.9 cm

Shendetang (Hall of the Prudent Virtue) is a hall mark associated with a range of fine porcelains made for the Hall of Prudent Virtue, a summer residence of Emperor Daoguang. The Daoguang Emperor was known as a prudent, kind, and frugal ruler; however, one area he chose to invest heavily was the Yuanmingyuan. The financial review of the Yuanmingyuan in 1824 showed a significant surplus; thus, the ample money available allowed Daoguang to construct the Shendetang, the new living quarters, in 1830, which were completed in 1831. The Hall featured three connecting wave roofs on a square-shaped structure, hence showing a distinct character that was markedly different from the more rigid Confucian-inspired architecture. The greater degree of freedom in arrangement and design reflects the style of porcelain that was lavishly produced for the Hall. Daoguang pieces inscribed with the Shendetang mark are attributable to the two decades between 1831 and 1850 and are often characterized by novel designs.
