拍品描述
A WHITE-GLAZED JAR, JOSEON DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY

Korea, 1392-1897. The elegant bulbous body balanced on a tall, tapered foot, and rising to an upright, cylindrical neck, covered overall with a lustrous and translucent glaze with dense crackle save for the foot rim.

Provenance: From a European private collection.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and firing irregularities including pitting and glaze recesses. One chip to the foot.

Weight: 3,226 g
Dimensions: Height 32.5 cm

Made during Korea’s Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), this elegant porcelain jar dates to the 18th century. Though its exact function remains unknown, it likely served as a storage jar and probably contained foodstuffs. Korean porcelains seldom show the bold palette of those from China’s Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties; rather, as strict followers of Neo-Confucianism, Koreans of the Joseon dynasty embraced an austere aesthetic vision, their porcelains sporting only limited decoration, relying on tautness of form and beauty of glaze for their aesthetic appeal.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related swollen shoulder vase with wide mouth and white glaze, 34.3 cm high, also dated to the 18th century, accession number 2000.12.

Auction result comparison:
Type: Closely related

Expert remark: Compare the closely related form and glaze. Note the size (36.8 cm).
