Description

In gold and silver makie a landscape with peonies by rocks and a waterfall, the details heightened with kirikane, on one side a running shishi, on the other a jumping shishi, both of gilt metal, on kinji with fine gold flakes. Nashiji and fundame to the inside. Signed Jōkasai saku. Inside a paper label with a four-character seal and the handwritten collection number 2771. Amber-coloured ojime. The subject became known as ‘shishi ni botan’. The combination of the king of animals with the queen of flowers is a popular theme in Japanese art. The subject probably goes back to the following legend: A priest of the Tendai school, during his stay in China, had a vision in which Monju Bosatsu appeared to him amongst peonies and dancing lions.
