Description

Realistically carved with sutures and an upper row of teeth and a snake winding through one of the eye sockets and placing its head with a darting tongue onto the skull's forehead. Signed Dai Nihon Sukeyuki zō in a square cartouche. Cloth covered box (Chinese). Izumi Sukeyuki 泉亮之 (1838-1920) came from Banba in ōmi. According to Ueda, he is said to have carved toad netsuke as well as Buddhist altars. He was probably influenced by a trip to Hida-Takayama, where he saw the work of Sukemizu 亮水/Sukenaga 亮長 and decided to carve similar pieces. He specialised in okimono of skulls, snakes and toads, as can be seen from his artist name Sentei 蟾亭 (Toad Pavilion). He must have been highly regarded, as his works were purchased by the Russian Crown Prince and Prime Minister Okuma Shigenobu in 1891, and he was commissioned to carve a wedding gift for Crown Prince Yoshihito in 1900. Sukeyuki was represented at the Chicago Columbia Exposition in 1893 with a skull, for which he won a prize. The biographical information on Sukeyuki varies, for example the year of death is 1918.
