The silvered metal panel finely decorated in kebori and katakiribori, as well as iro-e flat inlay in patinated tones of gold, silver, suaka, and bronze to depict a suit of armor laying against a tomobako box, the embroidered shifuku to the top, scrolls, folding fans, swords, and arrows scattered to the ground. Signed to the bottom-right corner KATSUKIYO saku [made by Katsukiyo]. Set inside a frame, behind glass, with decorative silk tassels and cords for suspension.

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear to the silvered ground.

With a wood tomobako inscribed ‘Bunbu’, referring to the concept of bunbu-ryodo, the quality of excelling at both the path of military arts and that of literary arts.

Kagawa Katsukiyo (1894-1967) was born in the Shimoya district of Edo. His grandfather was a fishmonger from Omi province who went later to Edo and his mother was a daughter of a sword dealer. When Katsuhiro was twelve he began to study arts from the famous masters: painting under Shibata Zenshin, wood carving under a Noh masks carver Ariyoshi Yoshinaga and the kinko craft from Nomura Katsumori, who himself was a pupil of Kano Natsuo. In the 1898, Katsuhiro joined the Tokyo School of Fine Arts and became a direct student of Kanō Natsuo. Together with Unno Shomin he is considered as one of the best Meiji era kinko artists from the school of Natsuo. In 1903 Katsuhiro became a full professor at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. On April 4, 1906, Kagawa Katsuhiro became an Imperial Household Artist, officially appointed by the Imperial Household Agency of Japan to create works of art for the Tokyo Imperial Palace and other imperial residences.
