AN AMUSING GOTO SCHOOL SHAKUDO KOZUKA DEPICTING A WRESTLING MATCH BETWEEN DAIKOKU AND HOTEI

Japan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The shakudo kozuka superbly worked in gold, silver, and shakudo takazogan, depicting Daikoku and Hotei engaged in a sumo match, their legs entangled as they wrestle, while Ebisu referees the bout, a traditional fan in his hand. On the left, the various lucky god’s symbols are present: rice bales, Daikoku’s mallet, a treasure bag, and Ebisu’s fishing rod with a carp. Behind two large bales, an attendant emerges. On the far right sits Fukurokuju watching the match intently, accompanied by another attendant. The scene is set against a finely textured nanako ground and framed within a raised border. The reverse finely polished.

LENGTH 9.6 cm
WEIGHT 30 g

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and small nicks.
Provenance: From an Australian private collection of sword fittings, collected over centuries with a discerning eye for quality and comprising mostly exceptionally fine kozuka from the noted Hamano and Goto schools.

The Goto School is a prestigious Japanese metalworking tradition, founded in the 15th century by Goto Yujo. Renowned for its mastery in creating sword fittings, the Goto School artisans specialized in working with gold, silver, and other precious metals. Their intricate designs often featured motifs inspired by nature and mythology. Over generations, the Goto School maintained its elite status, with successive masters serving the Tokugawa shogunate, making their work highly sought after for both its artistic and historical significance.
