GOTO JUNJO: A SUPERB SHAKUDO GOTO SCHOOL KOZUKA OF INO HAYATA AND MINAMOTO YORIMASA KILLING THE NUE

By Goto Junjo (1635-1699), signed Goto Junjo 後藤 順乗 with kakihan
Japan, late 17th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The shakudo kozuka superbly worked in gold, silver, and shakudo takazogan, depicting Minamoto Yorimasa to the right with his bow readied, and Ino Hayata to the left about to plunge his sword into the mythical nue creature, all against a masterful nanako ground, within a raised border. Signed GOTO JUNJO and kakihan (artist’s cursive monogram) to the polished reverse.

LENGTH 9.6 cm
WEIGHT 30.8 g

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear, such as tiny nicks or scratches.
Provenance: From an Australian private collection of sword fittings, collected over centuries with a discerning eye for quality and comprising mostly exceptionally fine kozuka from the noted Hamano and Goto schools.

Goto Junjo (1635-1699) is listed in the Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 481 (H 02293.0). He lived in Kyoto and is also known under his posthumous name Myosen. Goto Junjo is also listed in the Soken Kisho, 1781, vol. 2, p. 25, with his kakihan.

This kozuka illustrates a popular legend of the nue monster that had terrorized the building in which the Emperor slept until it was killed one night by the noted archer Minamoto Yorimasa (1106–1180) and Ino Hayata (dates unknown). Emperor Konoe (1139-1155) had become ill due to a strange presence heralded by a black cloud over the palace. The warrior Minamoto Yorimasa was sent to investigate and discovered a peculiar creature, called a nue. The monster had the face of a monkey, body of a tiger, and the tail of a snake. The poet warrior wounded the creature which was subsequently killed by Hayata. Yorimasa’s actions won him the court lady Ayame no Mae, who the Emperor gave him in marriage for ridding the capital of the menacing beast.

Museum comparison:
According to the Haynes Index the following kozuka is also by the hand of Goto Junjo. Compare with a persimmon kozuka in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number M.957-1931.
