A RARE HONEN (HORNBILL) MASK NETSUKE OF OKAME

Unsigned
Japan, 19th century

Finely modeled with characteristic plump cheeks and mirthful smile revealing teeth within, her eyes narrowed in laughter, and neatly incised red hair parted down the middle, the deep-red color naturally utilized from the exterior of the honen (hornbill). A central himotoshi bar to the back.

HEIGHT 4.9 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and natural imperfections including age cracks.
Provenance: From the estate of Clemens Merkelbach van Enkhuizen. Clemens Merkelbach van Enkhuizen (1937-2023), was a Dutch portrait painter characterized as an Impressionist. Together with his partner Gerard Spruyt (1922-2011), he collected religious artifacts, Chinese and Japanese porcelain, as well as Japanese woodcuts and netsuke. Clemens built up this extensive collection of Asian art from the 1970s to the early 21st century through purchases at auctions such as Mak van Waay, De Zon and de Zwaan, as well as from antique dealers in the Spiegelkwartier.

The hornbill is a bird of the Bucerotidae family having a large bill with a basal bony protuberance partly colored bright orange, known as honen and often used for inlaying the eyes of netsuke depicting rats, rabbits, and other animals whose eyes are red. Netsuke entirely carved from honen are exceedingly rare.

Okame (or Otafuku) represents a lovely, always smiling Japanese woman who brings happiness and good fortune to any man she marries. She is also known as the Goddess of Mirth and is a very popular image in Japanese culture. Otafuku literally means ‘much good fortune’, and Okame means ‘tortoise’, which is also an auspicious symbol of longevity, as tortoises lead long lives.
