NAGAMICHI SHUZAN: A SAISHIKI NETSUKE OF A FOX PRIEST (HAKUZOSU)

Japan, 19th century

Carved from boxwood and painted with polychrome pigments. The fox priest standing almost completely enveloped in a priest’s robe, a large cowl draped over its head, the two ears visible through the cloth at the top, the face with a sly expression, its human hands with long fingers, leaning against a cane, and pigmented in black, green, and blue, with gold highlights and stylized kiku. The back with asymmetrical himotoshi above the signature SHUZAN.

HEIGHT 5.6 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear.

Hakuzosu is the name of a popular kitsune character who shapeshifted into a priest in the Kyogen play Tsurigitsune. Kitsune are creatures imbued with magical powers and are known to have the ability to shapeshift. They are also believed to be animated by the devils.

Nagamichi Shuzan lived in Osaka towards the end of the 18th century and considered himself the direct successor to Yoshimura Shuzan.
