拍品描述
SHISEI: A FINE EBONY WOOD NETSUKE OF A HATCHING TENGU (TENGU NO TOMAGO)

By Shisei, signed Shisei 止誠
Japan, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Emerging from its egg, the hatching karasu (crow-beaked) tengu with its left wing already spread over the outside of the shell, and the beak slightly open with a tormented expression. The glaring eyes pierced and the plumage finely carved. The egg is smoothly polished with large, generously excavated himotoshi to the side and signed SHISEI – the artist appears to be unrecorded.

LENGTH 4 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear, nicks, and scratches.
Provenance: From a collection of netsuke, formed between 1964 and 1967, under the guidance of W. W. Winkworth. Bonhams, Fine Japanese Art, 6 November 2007, lot 44. A private collection, acquired from the above.

While this subject is rather common, the treatment in ebony (kokutan) is a true rarity.
