SUGIURA JOI: AN IRON TSUBA DEPICTING KANZAN AND JITTOKU

By Sugiura Joi (1701-1761), signed Issando Joi 一蝅堂 乘意 and seal Nagaharu 永春
Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of mokkogata form, with a kogai hitsu ana, the nakago-ana with some suaka (copper) sekigane, worked in iron and gold takazogan and hirazogan, as well as katakiribori and shishiaibori, one side with Kanzan and Jittoku, the reverse with pine trees and a pavilion beside a rock. The recto signed ISSANDO JOI and with the artist’s seal NAGAHARU.

Condition: Very good condition with expected old wear.

Sugiura Joi (1701-1761), also known as Issando Joi, is listed in Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, p. 450-451 (H 02135.0). The famous founder of the artist family and school of Joi, he was a pupil of Nara Toshinaga I. Together with Toshinaga, Masayuki, and Yasuchika, he is regarded to be one of the Four Great Nara Masters.
