JIROTARO NAOKATSU: AN IRON NOBUIE-STYLE TSUBA DEPICTING DRAGONFLIES

Jirotaro Naokatsu (1805-1858), signed Jirotaro Naokatsu
Japan, Edo (Tokyo), early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of mokkogata shape with a raised and rounded rim, with two udenuki-ana, worked in low relief with three dragonflies enclosed by the rim, partly decorated with a honeycomb pattern. Signed JIROTARO NAOKATSU.

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear.

The artist is listed in Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 1323 (H 06661.0). Haynes identifies the artist as a retainer of the Akimoto Daimyo of Tatebayashi in Kozuke. His works are often emulating the famous Nobuie style.
