Japan, Mito, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of kaku-marugata shape with a squared rim, worked on a rattan ground in gold, silver, sentoku, and shibuichi takazogan depicting a Winter scene of a small bird perched on a young plum branch, sprouting from the trunk of an old plum tree. Signed SEKIJOKEN MOTOZANE.

Condition: Very good condition with typical wear.

The artist is listed in the Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 1193 (H 06004.0). Haynes identifies the artist as the founder of the Taizan Sekijoken family school. He was the son of Motonori and studied at the Nara school masters in Edo.
