Each of kurikomi-mokkogata form, the shakudo frame finely carved in shishiaibori and kebori with a wave pattern interspersed with an aoi mon centering each lobe, each of the lobes centered by a further aoi mon, enclosing a silver plate incised with paulownia crests and leafy scrolling vines. The smaller tsuba with two kogai hitsu ana, one plugged in shakudo.

HEIGHT 8.6 cm and 7.8 cm
WEIGHT 180.9 g and 124.6 g

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and few tiny areas of corrosion.

Originally, the paulownia seal was the private symbol of the Japanese Imperial Family, from as early as the sixteenth century. The Toyotomi clan, led by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, later adopted the paulownia seal for use as the crest of his clan. After the Meiji Restoration, the seal was eventually adopted as the emblem of the Japanese government.

The Tokugawa's clan symbol, known in Japanese as Mitsuba Aoi or "triple hollyhock" (although commonly but mistakenly identified as hollyhock, the aoi actually belongs to the birthwort family and translates as "wild ginger"—Asarum), is a readily recognized icon symbolizing in equal parts the Tokugawa clan and the last shogunate.
