JOI: A SUGIURA JOI SCHOOL SUAKA KOZUKA WITH THE IMMORTAL JITTOKU

School of Sugiura Joi (1701-1761), signed Joi 乗意 with seal Nagharu
Japan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The suaka (refined copper) kozuka finely engraved in kebori and katakiribori worked with gold, shibuichi, and silver takazogan, hirazogan, and shishiaibori (sunken relief), depicting Jittoku (Shide) leaning on his broom. His left shoe peeks out from beneath his robe, while his hair, styled in classical fashion, is adorned with golden ribbons. He gazes at the viewer with a playful, mischievous smile, half-hidden behind his raised sleeve, as if trying to conceal his amusement. Signed JOI to the textured reverse, and with a raised seal Nagharu.

LENGTH 9.5 cm
WEIGHT 23.1 g

Condition: Excellent condition with very minor surface wear.
Provenance: From an Australian private collection of sword fittings, collected over centuries with a discerning eye for quality and comprising mostly exceptionally fine kozuka from the noted Hamano and Goto schools.

Jittoku
is a figure from Zen Buddhist and Chinese folklore. He was a kitchen helper at a Zen monastery, and though he appeared disheveled and was sometimes seen as eccentric or even mad, he possessed profound spiritual wisdom. The broom that Jittoku carries is symbolic of his humble nature and his role in "sweeping away" material illusions and worldly attachments. In Zen thought, the broom is not only a tool for physical cleanliness but also represents clearing the mind of distractions, leading to spiritual clarity and enlightenment. His character, along with the poet Hanshan, with whom he is often paired, embodies the idea that true wisdom can be found in simplicity and detachment from worldly desires.

Sugiura Joi (1701-1761) is listed in the Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 450 (H 02135.0). Born in the town of Kano in the Mino Province, he was a pupil of Nara Toshinaga I, and the famous founder of the artist family and school of Joi. Together with Toshinaga, Masayuki, and Yasuchika, he is regarded to be one of the ‘Four Great Nara-Masters.’
