拍品描述
A RARE SHIBUICHI KOZUKA WITH SAMURAI RATS IMITATING A DAIMYO PROCESSION

Unsigned
Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The migakiji (polished ground) shíbuichi kozuka worked in gold, silver, shakudo, and suaka (refined copper) takazogan, depicting three samurai rats, the central figure wielding a ceremonial pole, indicating the presence of a high-ranking person such as a daimyo, while the rat on the far right carries a paper lantern (choshin). This motif continues along the narrow side of the hilt. The reverse is skillfully engraved in kebori and katakiribori with a large group of rats imitating a daimyo procession and carrying a large palanquin.

LENGTH 9.7 cm
WEIGHT 28.1 g

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and two small nicks along the upper rim.
Provenance: From an Australian private collection of sword fittings, collected over centuries with a discerning eye for quality and comprising mostly exceptionally fine kozuka from the noted Hamano and Goto schools.

Daimyo processions were common between Edo and the regional capitals of Japan being in the early 17th century. Daimyo warlords were required to live in Edo alternating with periods of residence in their home prefecture. They moved between their two homes in large processions attended by many warriors.
