ICHIRYU TOMOYOSHI: A SUPERB SHIBUICHI KOZUKA WITH A WILD BOAR

By Ichiryu Tomoyoshi (1787-1858), signed Ichiryu Tomoyoshi and kakihan
Japan, dated 1852, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The migakiji (polished ground) shibuichi kozuka worked in gold, silver, and shibuichi takazogan and silver hirazogan, depicting a wild boar emerging from behind the trunk of a mighty pine tree, beneath the crescent moon. Signed and dated February 1852, ICHIRYU TOMOYOSHI with kakihan (artist’s cursive monogram), at the age of 65, to the textured reverse.

Condition: Excellent condition with minor surface wear.
Provenance: From an Australian private collection of sword fittings, collected over centuries with a discerning eye for quality and comprising mostly exceptionally fine kozuka from the noted Hamano and Goto schools.

Ichiryu Tomoyoshi (1787-1858) is listed in the Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 2013 (H 10192.0). He worked in Mito, Hitachi Province. Tomoyoshi's work stood out for its detailed use of soft metals like gold, silver, and copper, as well as its elaborate designs inspired by Japanese nature and folklore. His legacy lies in his artistic refinement and technical mastery, which has left a lasting mark on Japanese metalworking traditions.
