拍品描述
AN INLAID WOOD ‘SHIOZAKE’ BOKUTO (DOCTOR'S SWORD)

Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Finely carved as a dried salmon (shiozake), a classic dish during Japanese New Year (Shogatsu). The open mouth revealing an upper and lower row of tiny teeth, the flesh gently scraped for its meat, spare the tail and face, the eyes inlaid in mother-of-pearl with horn-inlaid pupils. The body pierced for suspension. The wood with a fine, naturally grown, dark patina.

LENGTH 36 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear and natural imperfections. Few minor nicks and light scratches.

During the Edo period, with the end of the civil rivalry between the Shogun and his enemies, carrying arms became obsolete in Japan. The wearing of small dummy swords by the Samurai was imitated by doctors, artists, and other professionals as a symbol of social and professional status. During the 18th and 19th centuries the bokuto lost its sword-like appearance and size and took on a more abstract and decorative form, continuing into the Meiji period and beyond.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related dark wood bokuto depicting a dried salmon, 47.9 cm long, dated to the late 19th century, Meiji period, at Bonhams, The James A. Rose Collection of Netsuke and Sagemono, 17 September 2013, New York, lot 2095 (sold for USD 8,125).
