Published: Sydney L. Moss (2010) they are all fire and every one doth shine. The Elly Nordskog Collection of Japanese Inro, Pipecases and Netsuke, London, pp. 42-43, no. 4.

Of rectangular form, with a roiro ground finely decorated in red and gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e as well as mother-of-pearl inlays, each side depicting kiku blossoms above turbulent waves. The top, bottom, sides, and interior of the compartments with nashiji, and fundame edges.

With an ojime in the form of a twisted amber bead.

HEIGHT 6.8 cm, LENGTH 5.9 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor wear, few light natural age cracks along the rims and edges, warping to the base, and minor flaking to the lacquer. Few natural fissures to the bead.
Provenance: Ex-collection Elinor ‘Elly’ Nordskog.

Kiku and water, also known as Kikusui, are a reference to the Chinese legend of Kikujido, which tells the story of a young courtier who was exiled by the emperor to a forgotten valley. There he passed the time writing poems on the leaves of kiku flowers and let them float in a passing stream.
