A FINE INLAID WOOD BOX DEPICTING AN EMA (PLAQUE FOR SHRINE), AFTER A DESIGN BY MARUYAMA OKYO (1733-1795)

Unsigned
Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

A remarkable tonkotsu or seal case, not only due to the variety of techniques used but also the subject matter and inscription are of interest. The tobacco box is inlaid in wood, shibuichi, antler, and lacquer, one side with an ema (votive plaque for worshipping at a shrine) depicting a horse below a pine tree and the other side with a second framed ema of Kanshin in the famous leg-crawling scene, detailed with gold and copper hirazogan. The tonkotsu is further embellished with a beautiful plum tree bearing red blossoms, with several fallen petals to the side of the horse ema. The interior with two compartments, indicating that this was likely used as a seal case, and the cover and base with cord holes. The wood bearing an attractive grain.

The ema of Kanshin with inscriptions:

‘Hono shi mae [a dedication to a shrine]’, ‘Okyo’ with seal, ‘Tenmei gan’nen shinchu sangatsu kichijitsu [on an auspicious day in the third month of the first year of Tenmei (1781), the year of metal ox]’, and ‘Matsudaira Kii no Kami [Matsudaira, the Defender of Kii (known as Matsudaira Iedata, Katahara)]’ – likely indicating that this was copied from an original design by Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) which was created in 1781.

LENGTH 10 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor expected wear, traces of use, light nibbling to edges.
