MORIO: A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF TANUKI NO HARA TSUZUMI

By Morio, signed Morio 守雄
Japan, early to mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Published: Meinertzhagen, Frederick / Lazarnick, George (1986) MCI, Part A, p. 578, entry number 1873d.

Finely carved as a tanuki no hara tsuzumi (belly drumming raccoon dog), the fur finely incised, its right foreleg raised, the other foreleg beating its distended stomach. The face with a jovial expression, baring sharp fangs, upwards turned snout, the eyes inlaid in mother of pearl with dark pupils. Natural himotoshi through the left hind leg, signed underneath MORIO.

HEIGHT 3.6 cm

Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear.
Provenance: Glendining’s & co. auction, 13 April 1928. From the private collection of the former owner of Galerie Japan-Kunst, Vienna. Acquired during the late 20th century from various dealers such as Barry Davies and collector friends such as Marcel Lorber.

The tanuki possesses magical powers and can change forms, sometimes into Buddhist monks; they are jovial, but also dangerous, as they have been known to suffocate hunters with their enormous scrotums. The act of drumming on the belly, according to legend, was used by tanuki to beguile travelers and hunters to lead them astray. However, it has also been said that tanuki would get together just for fun, drumming on their bellies under the moonlight, perhaps even with some sake involved.

According to Meinertzhagen, Frederick / Lazarnick, George (1986) MCI, p. 578, the style of this artist suggests that he was connected to the school of Minko.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related wood netsuke of a tanuki, signed Minko, dated to the Edo period, at Bonhams, Japanese Art, 10 July 2023, Skinner Boston, lot 43 (sold for USD 4,480).
